Scottish Clans - Tartans, Feuds & Why Your Surname Might Be Scottish
Is your surname Scottish? Possibly. Probably. But the answer is more complicated and considerably more interesting than a simple yes or no, and Lesley Kennedy, who married into a clan and has spent years on tour gently managing the expectations of people who arrived in Scotland certain their name connected them to something dramatic, is going to walk you through it.
In this episode: what a clan actually was and how the system worked; the MacDonald-Campbell feud and the Massacre of Glencoe; the Johnston-Maxwell feud, which features a peace meeting that ended with nobody at peace; the tartans, ancient textile tradition, considerably less ancient specific patterns, and how Sir Walter Scott managed to invent a national dress code in about three weeks; what happened to the clan system after Culloden; and why the clans are, against all reasonable expectations, thriving today.
